Top 3 2024 Reads and 2025 Reading Goals

I made Top 3 lists for both genres with Shepard.com, but now I want to make a final call for the year and give the last couple books I’ve snuck in a chance to dethrone those already listed. It’s a tough call, but let’s dive in. Ultimately, the books that left me wanting more are the ones that topped the list.

HM - S. by JJ Abrams and Doug Dorst
This book was more about the experience than the actual book as it was ‘written’ the additional ephemera and notes along with the ‘manuscript’ of The Ship of Theseus was such a fun way to interact with a book that I almost knew I would love it before I read a single word. I read it in several passes (check out all the blogs out there on how to best tackle this one!) and was always eager for more... I STILL want more!

#3 - What Feasts at Night by T. Kingfisher
I love some gothic horror, especially retellings/inclusion of old folklore myths. The first Sworn Soldier book (What Moves the Dead was also a top 3 read last year) and I was thrilled to get another dose of Alex Easton and crew. All my favorite characters were back and thrust into a new setting and new nightmare. It’s a fun, fast read and I am eager for more.

#2 - Soar by Tiffany Noelle Chacon

Technically this is the third book in the Equestrian Dream series but it can be read as a stand alone. I found my way onto the ARC team and I am so glad I did! I quickly went back to read the rest of the series (I needed more and I got the instant satisfaction!) A perfect balance of horses and romance with high stakes and all the warm fuzzy feelings you want in a romance. I love this author so much, I’ve even jumped into her other sports romances even though they are not usually my thing and.... I’m loving them too.

#1 - Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

I don’t know why I slept so long on this one. Probably because sci-fi isn't usually my thing, but smart books are. I know some people don’t love all the science in this one but I thoroughly enjoyed it. And when we meet Rocky... I was 200% sold (and I’m not one to exaggerate statistics, but this book deserves it) The dual time-line is a great way to give some thriller tension to what could have been a standard sci-fi offering. Finding out not long after finishing this one that we are getting a movie too... that’s the more I NEED (don't ruin it Hollywood!)

2025 Reading Goals

This year I read more than I thought and upped my goal for 30 to 38 books, I did include a few audio reads in there from trips to the gym, but I am not really an audiobook person so I don't think I’ll be keeping up with those. Given that, I think I will go with a goal of 35 books for 2025 and see where that takes me.

Tell me your favorite books of the year and goals for next, maybe I’ll add your top reads to my TBR!
